Crystal-clear lagoons, lush mountains, vibrant coral reefs, quiet colorful sunrises, and rich Polynesian culture are some of Marketing Manager, Denise Schmiedeknecht’s favorite things about The Islands of Tahiti. She shares insights into her favorites with us after just returning from the islands.

118 islands nestled into five different island groups. Pure, natural and unspoiled, The Islands of Tahiti will tempt, captivate and charm you. They will draw you in with warm sunshine, glittering blue lagoons, colorful tropical fish, the ever-present scent of the Tiare flower and the beauty of the Tahitian culture. Our recent nine-night stay in the islands included three nights on Moorea and six nights on Bora Bora with a wide variety of activities, and also a bit of relaxation time, too.

My favorite things to do while in The Islands of Tahiti range from organized activities to small details that contribute to my overall happiness in the islands.

Le Marche

A morning wander through Papeete’s bustling Le Marche, the 2-story public market in the heart of the capital city of French Polynesia, is a great way to start the day. Here is where I find scented monoi oil (coconut oil infused with tiare flowers and other delicious scents), beautifully woven handbags and hats, colorful pareo, maybe a flowy beach cover-up, t-shirts, wood carvings and more. But the market is also where the locals are shopping for their daily staples – coconut oil for cooking, freshly caught fish, hand-picked fruit and vegetables for sale and vibrant selections in the flower market. There are often ladies making hei (flower crowns) right there! Upstairs and in various shops and boutiques around the market, there are also Tahitian black pearls that are fashioned into earrings, bracelets, necklaces and offer a selection for every size pocket book. I try to include the public market in every trip to the islands and even have my favorite dress shops nearby as well!

Lagoon Tours

Lagoon Tour on Moorea

Lagoon Tour on Moorea

Spend a day on one of the lagoons in The Islands of Tahiti. Be guided by local Tahitians who will share stories of their childhood, their way of life, their culture and a little history for context. Snorkel amongst manta ray, black-tipped sharks, stingray, colorful tropical fish, turtles and colorful coral as you stop at a variety of different sites. Whether you’re in the lagoon of Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha’a, Tetiaroa, Fakarava, Rangiroa or any of the other islands, you are bound to come away wanting more. Some resorts are also perfectly situated in their location near coral heads, or have created areas where coral will grow, which attracts large and small fish and sea creatures to snorkel near.

French-Tahitian Style Food

Local Food Poisson Cru

Local Food - Poisson Cru

Almost without fail, you will be offered a variety of food options when in the islands. Often, menus will revolve around fresh seafood caught that day and prepared simply, with a touch of French influence. The national dish is called Poisson Cru and is a mix of freshly caught whitefish marinated in lime juice, soaked in fresh coconut milk and then combined with julienned vegetables. Divine! I love this for lunch and dinner. My husband even had it with his breakfast daily, just like Tahitians do. However, do not miss the fresh baked goods at breakfast! My favorites are the French croissants, Pan au Chocolat, and any locally made goodie on the buffet (I’m not normally a buffet person, except in French Polynesia!) Also, be sure to try the pineapple preserves, a coconut preserve or any other local preserve.

Moorea 4x4 Tour

Embark on a 4x4 tour of Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Taha’a or Bora Bora.
My personal favorite is on the island of Tahiti where you’ll journey into the heart of the island, exploring the stunning Papenoo Valley. It doesn’t take long to leave the city of Papeete behind as you enter the island's lush interior. The rugged 4x4 trails take you through dense rainforests, crossing crystal-clear rivers, and navigating rocky paths, offering a true off-road adventure. As you make your way toward Papenoo Valley, your guide will share insights into Tahiti’s history and culture. The valley is a paradise of towering mountains, fertile lands, and cascading waterfalls, offering panoramic views of Tahiti’s natural beauty. For me, the highlight of the tour is the chance to immerse yourself in the island's untouched wilderness and also learn about the Tahitian culture. It is the perfect starting point to your Tahitian vacation.

Serene Sunrises

Le Taha'a Resort by Pearl Resorts

Waking up in French Polynesia feels like stepping into a dream of tranquility. The soft sound of waves gently lapping against the shore, the rustle of palm leaves in the morning breeze, and the warm, golden light of the rising sun create an atmosphere of pure serenity. Surrounded by lush tropical greenery and crystal-clear waters, the air is fresh, and the world feels wonderfully still. As the day begins, you feel a deep sense of peace, disconnected from the hustle and bustle of life, allowing you to fully embrace the island's calm and beauty. I will take this opportunity to make a cup of coffee and quietly sit outside on my deck to let the day begin around me as I listen to the sounds of the island waking up as well.
